What is a Ghost Immobiliser?
A Ghost immobiliser is a next-generation vehicle security device developed by Autowatch. Unlike traditional immobilisers, which are either factory-fitted or added on as a visible component, the Ghost is a discreet, aftermarket system that integrates directly with your vehicle’s CAN bus, the internal communication network that connects your car’s electronic systems.
Because it operates invisibly within the vehicle’s existing wiring, it leaves no visible trace for a thief to detect or bypass. There is no key fob, no additional hardware on show and no radio frequency signal that can be jammed or cloned.
How Does a Ghost Immobiliser Work?
At the heart of the Ghost is a simple but highly effective concept: before the vehicle can be driven, the driver must enter a unique PIN sequence using buttons that are already fitted to the car. This can include those on the steering wheel, door panels or central console.
Here’s the process step by step:
- The vehicle starts normally — the engine can be turned on as usual.
- The driver enters their personal PIN sequence using existing in-car buttons.
- Once the correct sequence is entered, the car is allowed to drive.
- • If no valid PIN is entered, or the wrong sequence is used, the vehicle remains immobilised and cannot be driven away.
This means that even if a thief has your physical key, a cloned key fob or access to your OBD port, they cannot move the vehicle without knowing your unique sequence. There is no universal bypass.

What is CAN Bus Technology?
CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is the communication system that modern vehicles use to allow different electronic components to talk to each other, from the engine control unit to the gearbox, dashboard, and more.
The Ghost taps into this network rather than cutting into physical wiring. This means it is compatible with a wide range of vehicles and does not introduce points of failure or interfere with the car’s normal operation. It also means there is no telltale physical modification a thief could identify and work around.
Is a Ghost Immobiliser the Same as a Factory Immobiliser?
No. A factory immobiliser, the type fitted as standard to most modern cars, prevents the engine from starting without the correct key or fob. However, as relay theft and key cloning have demonstrated, these systems can be defeated.
A Ghost immobiliser adds a second, independent layer of protection. Even if the factory immobiliser is bypassed, the vehicle still cannot be driven without the Ghost PIN sequence. Think of it as a second lock on your front door.
Who Makes Ghost Immobilisers?
Ghost immobilisers are manufactured by Autowatch, a UK-based vehicle security specialist with decades of experience in the industry. The product range currently includes the Ghost-II and the newly launched Ghost-III, which features next-generation CAN-FD support for the latest high-speed vehicle networks.
All Ghost immobilisers are installed by a network of approved professionals, ensuring the system is fitted correctly and without risk to your vehicle’s electronics.
Are Ghost Immobilisers Legal?
Yes. Ghost immobilisers are a legitimate aftermarket security product and are widely recognised by insurance providers. Some insurers will offer reduced premiums for vehicles fitted with a Thatcham-approved or equivalent device — it’s worth checking with your provider.
